Croatia

Croatia is two planning problems in one: year-round city life in Zagreb and highly seasonal coastal living in Split or Dubrovnik. Its digital-nomad temporary stay is now one of Europe's clearer dedicated routes.

Where to start in Croatia

Zagreb

Best for: Year-round services, jobs and lower seasonality.

Watch: Winter weather and tram access matter more than proximity to tourist sights.

Split

Best for: Coastal city life and island connections.

Watch: Summer tourism can push furnished-rental prices sharply higher.

Dubrovnik

Best for: Historic setting and international tourism.

Watch: Housing supply, crowds and seasonality can make long stays expensive.

01

Seasonality is the key budget variable

A January housing search and a July housing search on the coast can look like different markets. Zagreb is more stable year-round; Split and Dubrovnik require explicit high-season and low-season budgets.

For a multi-month stay, ask whether the rental is truly available through the tourist season before assuming a monthly rate can continue.

02

Croatia has a dedicated digital-nomad temporary stay

Croatia's Ministry of the Interior defines digital nomads as third-country nationals working through communication technology for a foreign company or their own company that is not registered in Croatia and does not provide services to Croatian employers.

Temporary stay can be granted for up to 18 months. Current official guidance lists a monthly means-of-subsistence benchmark of EUR 3,622.50, with higher requirements for accompanying family members. Health insurance, purpose of stay, criminal-record evidence and a Croatian address are also part of the process.

03

Coast and capital need different transport strategies

Zagreb's tram network supports car-free city life. On the coast, local buses, ferries and seasonal congestion matter more. If you plan frequent island travel, include ferry schedules and port access in the housing decision.
