Indonesia should never be planned as if Bali represents the whole country. Bali, Jakarta and Yogyakarta have different transport, housing and workday patterns, and Indonesia now has a specific remote-worker limited-stay visa category.
Choose your base

01
Bali has a tourism-driven rental market and a mature coworking ecosystem. Jakarta is a megacity where commute geometry matters most, while Yogyakarta offers a smaller and often cheaper urban base.
For Bali especially, check road travel at real peak times. A property that looks close on a map can be inconvenient if every trip funnels through congested roads.
02
Indonesian immigration offices list the E33G limited-stay visa for remote workers. Current immigration guidance for remote workers requires an employment contract confirming remote work and evidence of income of USD 60,000 per year, or USD 5,000 per month.
Use the official e-Visa/immigration system and recheck current document requirements before applying. Do not confuse remote work for a foreign employer with authorization to take local Indonesian employment.
03
Test broadband at the property, keep a local mobile-data backup and price transport realistically. In Bali and Jakarta, spending a little more on location can save a large amount of time and ride-hailing cost each month.
