Mexico offers very different long-stay experiences in Mexico City, Mérida and Playa del Carmen. The main planning split is big-city convenience versus coastal lifestyle, with a temporary-resident visa for stays beyond 180 days.

01
Do not use one Mexico number. Mexico City transport and rent patterns are unlike Mérida, while Playa del Carmen adds tourism-season pricing and coastal transport tradeoffs.
For stays of several months, separate furnished short-term housing from a normal residential rental. Utilities, deposits and internet quality can materially change the total.
02
Mexico's federal government states that a temporary resident visa is for people intending to remain in Mexico for more than 180 days and up to four years. Applicants generally need to show the purpose of stay and financial solvency, with the relevant consulate confirming how solvency is documented.
Do not treat the visa as automatic permission for any type of local paid work. Residence purpose and work authorization are separate questions.
03
In Mexico City, choose around daily routes and transit; in Mérida and Playa del Carmen, test whether your lifestyle pushes you toward ride-hailing or a car. Reliable home internet and backup mobile data should be checked before committing to a long rental.
